About PTI

Press Trust of India (PTI) is India's premier news agency, with a reach that covers every corner of India. It employs more than 600 journalists and 800 stringers to cover almost every city and small town in India. Collectively, our journalists put out more than 1,000 text stories, about 200 live videos, about 130 raw video stories, more than 30 voiced video stories and 250 photographs including graphics every day to feed the appetite of the diverse subscribers, who include the mainstream media, the specialized presses, research groups, companies, and government and non-governmental organizations.

PTI correspondents are also based in leading capitals and important business and administrative centres around the world. It also has exchange arrangements with several foreign news agencies to magnify its global news footprint.

Currently, PTI commands 90 per cent of news agency market share in India.

PTI was registered in 1947 and started functioning in 1949. Today, PTI can well and truly take pride in the legacy of its work, and in its contribution towards the building of free and fair media in India. On its golden jubilee in 1999, President K R Narayanan said: "We got Independence in August 1947. But Independence in news and information we got only with the establishment of PTI in 1949. That is the significance of PTI...".

K N Shanth Kumar

Chairman

K.N. Shanth Kumar is a Chairman [The Printers (Mysore) Pvt. Ltd.] on the Board of Press Trust of India. He is Director of Bengaluru-based, The Printers (Mysore) Pvt Ltd, which publishes Deccan Herald, Prajavani, Sudha and Mayura newspapers. Mr Kumar has been involved in the management of the company in various roles since 1983. He has served in various capacities in the newspaper industry. He was Chairman of the Audit Bureau of Circulations, Member of the Executive Committee of the Indian Newspaper Society for more than 20 years and was also Chairman of the Board of Press Trust of India. Mr Kumar has a keen interest in sports and photography. He has covered all Olympic Games since 1988 as an accredited photographer, besides several other sporting events.

Mahendra Mohan Gupta

Vice Chairman

Mahendra Mohan Gupta or MMG, as he is affectionately known, is Vice Chairman on the Board of Press Trust of India. Mr Gupta is Chairman of Jagran Prakashan Ltd, one of India’s leading media and communications group which publishes newspapers like Dainik Jagran and Midday. Mr Gupta was a Member of Parliament, having served as a lawmaker in the Rajya Sabha. Over the years, he has been on key policy-making councils of the media industry. He was President of the Indian Language Newspaper Association, President of the Indian Newspaper Society and also Member of the Film Censor Board. He has also served as Chairman on the Board of Press Trust of India

Hormusji N Cama

Director

Mr Hormusji N. Cama is a Director on the Board of Press Trust of India. He is the Chairman of the Board of the Audit Bureau of Circulations, the only private association recognised by the Government of India to certify paid newspaper sales. He is also the Director of Asia's oldest newspaper, The Bombay Samachar, and the former President of the Indian Newspaper Society (two terms), former Chairman of Media Research Users Council, the body that runs the world’s largest readership survey, former Chairman of the Readership Survey Council of India, former member of the Press Council of India (for nine years), former Chairman of the Commonwealth Press Union (India) and former Chairman of the Press Trust of India. He continues to be on the Boards of INS and MRUC (as a special invitee).

Mr. M V Shreyams Kumar

Director

M V Shreyams Kumar is a Director on the Board of Press Trust of India. He is Managing Director of Mathrubhumi group, which includes the Mathrubhumi newspaper, the books division, 11 periodicals, Mathrubhumi News and Kappa youth channel, Club FM radio and digital platforms. He is also a Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) and the architect of Mathrubhumi International Festival of Letters as well as the Global Vice-president of International Advertising Association. Shreyams Kumar is also on the Board of Directors of News Broadcasters Association besides being an Executive Committee member of Indian Newspaper Society and President of Kerala Television Federation. The son of writer-politician, late Union Minister M P Veerendra Kumar and Usha, Shreyams Kumar served consecutive terms as MLA from Kalpetta.

N Ravi

Director

N. Ravi is the Director of the Board of Press Trust of India, the country’s premier news agency. A former Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu, he is currently the Publisher of The Hindu Group of Newspapers. He was President of the Editors Guild of India and Chairman of the India Chapter of the International Press Institute. Mr Ravi has a Master’s degree in economics and a degree in law. He has won several academic awards including a gold medal in constitutional and international law. He joined The Hindu in 1972 as a reporter and moved up to the post of the newspaper’s Editor-in-Chief, which he held from October 2013 to January 2015

Aveek kumar Sarkar

Director

Aveek Sarkar is a Director on the Board of Press Trust of India. He is the Editor Emeritus and Vice Chairman of the Ananda Bazar Group of Publications and Chairman, Ananda News Network (ABP TV Group) and Chief Editor, Fortune India. Mr Sarkar started training as a journalist while he was a student, just out of school. Once he had finished his graduation from the University of Calcutta he went to Britain where he was tutored by the legendary Harold Evans, then the Editor of The Sunday Times. As the Chief Editor of the Ananda Bazar Group, Mr Sarkar was the moving force behind the transformation of the group’s publications. Mr Sarkar is a man of rich and varied interests. Books, food, wine and art are his four principal loves.

Riyad Mathew

Director

Riyad Mathew is a Director on the Board of Press Trust of India. He is Director of the Malayala Manorama media group. A member of the management, Mr Mathew looks after The Week, a group publication. Before joining The Week, he was with The Associated Press as a Correspondent in Washington DC. Mr Mathew did his Master’s in Journalism from the University of Maryland and trained with The Washington Post, The Washington Times and Capital News Service. Mr Mathew is an Executive Board Member of the International Press Institute, Vienna. He is a Member of the Council of Management of Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC). He has also served as Chairman on the Board of Press Trust of India.

Mr L. Adimoolam

Director

Mr L. Adimoolam was appointed as the Director on the Board of Press Trust of India in 2022. He is the Publisher of Dinamalar daily’s Coimbatore Edition and its Business & Technical Head. An engineering graduate of the prestigious Regional Engineering College, Trichy, Mr Adimoolam has been part of the Senior Management of Dinamalar for the last 37 years, handling both technical and marketing arenas. He was instrumental in bringing the latest upgrades in printing, pre-press, distribution and web-media. He is also the Secretary of RL Institute of Nautical Science, Madurai and Managing Director of RL Clean Power Pvt Ltd., the first solar power plant commissioned in Tamil Nadu. He is the immediate Past President of the Indian Newspaper Society (INS), and a Special Invitee in Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC) Management Council in 2019-20, 2020-21 & 2021-22. He is also a Committee Member in Sri Sathya Sai Trust (Tamil Nadu) and Sri Sathya Sai Books and Publications Trust Tamil Nadu. Since February 2019 he has been the Chairman of Sri Vadapalani Andavar Temple, Chennai, a position appointed by the Government of Tamil Nadu.

Vijay Kumar Chopra

Director

Vijay Kumar Chopra is the Director of the Board of Press Trust of India. He is the Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of the Hind Samachar Group of Newspapers. He is also Chairman-cum-Managing Director of the company since 1984. A graduate from the DAV College in Jalandhar, Mr Chopra took training in printing technology in Leipzig, Germany. He also underwent a newspaper management course at the Thompson Foundation in UK. Mr Chopra has worked extensively for the underprivileged section of the society and instituted several funds for them. Mr Chopra is a Member of the Editors Guild of India, former President of the Indian Newspaper Society and past Member of the Press Council of India. He has also served as Chairman on the Board of Press Trust of India.

Vineet Jain

Director

Vineet Jain is a Director on the Board of Press Trust of India. He is the Managing Director of Bennett, Coleman & Co Ltd (The Times Group). As the Times Group’s strategist, marketing visionary and editorial architect, Mr Jain has spearheaded the group’s highly successful forays into internet, radio, television and outdoor media. He is also responsible for revamping the group’s daily newspapers into youthful, contemporary and cutting-edge brands. Mr Jain is the Chancellor of Bennett University – the group’s higher education entity. He is the recipient of many prestigious awards, including the Rajiv Gandhi Award for Corporate Excellence 2009, Indian TellyAward 2009 and Media Person of the Year Award from International Advertising Association (IAA) in 2015.

Viveck Goenka

Director

Viveck Goenka is a Director on the Board of Press Trust of India. He is Chairman, Managing Director and Editorial Director of the Indian Express Group.Mr Goenka, a B.Tech, has been on the boards of several newspaper forums, including the MRUC, the ABC, and is a past president of the Indian Newspaper Society. He has also served as Chairman of the Board of Press Trust of India.Mr Goenka launched the prestigious Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards.Mr Goenka is an auto enthusiast and has a varied collection of 4x4s, vintage and classic cars. He takes an active interest in wildlife conservation and water management.Mr Goenka owns and manages a premium chain of restaurants, patisseries and bars.

Prof. Deepak Nayyar

Independent Director

Deepak Nayyar is an Independent Director on the Board of Press Trust of India. He is Emeritus Professor of Economics at Jawaharlal Nehru University and an Honorary Fellow of Balliol College, Oxford. Mr Nayyar served as Vice Chancellor of the University of Delhi and as Chief Economic Advisor to the Government of India. Mr Nayyar was Distinguished University Professor of Economics at the New School for Social Research, New York. He has also taught at the University of Oxford, the University of Sussex and the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta. Mr Nayyar has served as a Director on the Boards of State Bank of India, EXIM Bank, Maruti, SAIL, ONGC and ICRA.

Mr. R. Gopalakrishnan

Independent Director

Ramabadran Gopalakrishnan is an Independent Director on the Board of Press Trust of India. He is a well known corporate figure who has served as Chairman of Unilever Arabia, Executive Director of Tata Sons Ltd and director of several other Tata companies. An engineering graduate from IIT Kharagpur, Mr. Gopalakrishnan began his career in 1967 as a computer analyst with Hindustan Lever. He worked in the marketing function before moving to general management. During his years with Unilever, he was based in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, as CEO of the Arabia unit. Later, he was managing director of Brooke Bond Lipton India and then vice-chairman with Hindustan Lever. He has been president of the All India Management Association. Mr. Gopalakrishnan has written 12 books on management, corporate governance and other subjects.

Mr. Shivshankar Menon

Independent Director

Shivshankar Menon is an Independent Director on the Board of Press Trust of India. He is a former Indian diplomat, who served as National Security Adviser of India under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He had previously served as the Foreign Secretary to the Government of India.Prior to that he was Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan, and Sri Lanka and ambassador to China and Israel. He is currently Visiting Professor of International Relations at Ashoka University. Menon, who speaks Chinese and German, also serves as Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Institute of Chinese Studies based in New Delhi. He has been a Fisher Family Fellow at the Kennedy School, Harvard University, 2015 and Richard Wilhelm Fellow at MIT in 2015. He was chosen to be one of the “Top 100 Global Thinkers” by Foreign Policy magazine in 2010. Menon also wrote "Choices: Inside The Making of Indian Foreign Policy" that was first published in 2016.

Vijay Joshi

CEO & EIC

Vijay Joshi has been PTI’s Editor-in-Chief [EIC] since February 2017 and was appointed CEO in January 2022. He currently holds dual positions of CEO & EIC. He previously worked for The Associated Press, a U.S.-based international news agency, for 27 years. He served in five countries for the AP in various roles, including the last one as the head of Southeast Asian operations based in Bangkok. He has reported from more than 30 countries around the world, mostly in South Asia, Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Joshi has Bachelor’s degree in Communications and Journalism from Osmania University, Hyderabad, and a Master of Science degree in Marine Geology. After completing his formal education, Joshi worked for the Indian Express for one year before joining PTI as a sub-editor in 1986. He left PTI in 1989 to join the AP, where a five-year stint in New Delhi was followed by the foreign postings based in Singapore, Cairo, Malaysia and Thailand. Joshi’s interests include travel, photography, music, science and Indian history.
