New Delhi, Oct 12 (PTI)
A 50-member delegation of Myanmar-based diplomats, including Indian Ambassador Vikram Misri, visited on October 2 the restive state of Rakhine, from where thousands of Rohingya Muslims have fled after incidents of violence.

This was informed by External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar here today. However, he did not give details of the visit and subsequent observations.

"Government of Myanmar had invited diplomats, based there to visit the Rakhine state and our ambassador did participate in the trip organised on October 2. Around 50 diplomats were taken to half a dozen villages in northern districts of Maungdaw and Rathedaung (of Rakhine)," Kumar said.

Lakhs of Rohingya Muslims have fled the state in the face of violence and persecution.

India, in a statement last month, had expressed "deep concern" over developments in Rakhine state and had urged that the situation should be handled with "restraint and maturity", focusing on the welfare of the civilian population alongside those of the security forces.
