STAFF WRITER 14:17 HRS IST

Raipur, Nov 7 (PTI) About 35 per cent voting was recorded till noon in the bypolls to Vaishali Nagar Assembly seat in Chhattisgarh's Durg district.

The polling began at 8:00 am in 221 booths amidst tight security arrangements. The voter turnout till 12.30 pm was around 35 per cent, District Election Officer Ram Singh Thakur said.

The voting began on a slow note, but picked up later with long queues witnessed outside polling booths, despite sweltering heat, he said.

Over two lakh voters, including 97,200 women, are eligible to exercise their franchise in Vaishali Nagar, where 15 candidates are in fray.

The bypoll was necessitated after BJP legislator Saroj Pandey was elected to the Lok Sabha in May.

The counting will be held on November 10.
